Extracts from the cladodes of the prickly pear are characterised in particular by the long-chain sugars, minerals and polyphenols they contain. Aqueous extracts made from them create an intensively moisturising and protective layer on the skin and have a soothing effect. Therefor, the extract is especially well suited for the care of dry skin.

Water is the foundation of the water phase and solvent for hydrophilic (water-loving) substances.

Alcohol is another term for ethanol or ethyl alcohol. In manufacturing plant extracts contained in Weleda's products, mixtures of alcohol and water are used as extraction agents in some formulations. The consistency and stability of natural cosmetic products are improved by alcohol.

Glycerin is a natural component of fats and oils, which consist mainly of triglycerides (a combination of glycerin and three fatty acids). The glycerin that Weleda uses is obtained exclusively from plant oils. Glycerin is used as a moisturiser in cosmetic products as it is able to release the water it absorbs. Glycerin also makes oil-in-water emulsions easier to spread and has a smoothing and protecting effect on the skin.

Wheat Germ Oil is a light-yellow vegetable oil, that is rich in Vitamin E. It is rich in linoleic and alpha linolenic acid and is especially suitable for dry and mature skin.

Glyceryl Oleate is an emulsifier*, which is produced from various vegetable oils and is used for stabilising O/W emulsions (oil-in-water-emulsions). It leaves a light feeling on the skin, making it soft, silky and smooth.

Xanthan Gum is a high molecular weight, long chain carbohydrate (polysaccharide), which is used as a natural gelling agent, emulsion stabilizer, binder and viscosity regulator.

Larch bark extract stands out here in particular for its complex polysaccharides which are able to bind water. They swell as they absorb water and have a moisturising effect preventing the formation of dry-skin wrinkles.

The roots of the Ruscus Aculeatus Root Extract contain - among others - phytosterols and flavonoids. The extract has a toning and calming effect on the skin.

The distillate of witch hazel has a toning and soothing effect on the skin. Therefore, witch hazel water is a suitable component of facial cleansing products.

Citric Acid is an organic fruit acid and is used in low concentrations in the emulsions to stabilise the pH-value.

Water soluble hydrolyzed wheat protein is obtained from wheat kernels. It has a moisturising effect on both the hair and skin. It nourishes the skin and is used as a conditioner in shampoos and emulsions.

Glyceryl caprylate is a co-emulsifier that is primarily used to stabilise O/W emulsions (oil-in-water emulsions). It possesses replenishing, moisture regulating and wetting properties. Glyceryl caprylate is manufactured using various vegetable oils.
